EU Might Respond to ‘Unjustified’ US Travel Restrictions, Official Says

The European Union might “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans imposed by the United States on five European individuals involved in combating digital hatred and misinformation, an EU official has said.

European Leaders Condemn US Move as ‘Coercion’

Officials from Europe such as Emmanuel Macron accused the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions were placed on figures that were at the heart of efforts to enact legislation governing American tech companies.

“For too long, European activists have led coordinated campaigns to pressure American platforms to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” stated a senior US official in a social media post. “This government will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”

Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported the French president in condemning the move.

The restrictions were imposed this week against a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with several anti-disinformation campaigners, from Germany and the United Kingdom.

A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance

This European legislation is viewed by US officials as a form of censorship, while European leaders argue the regulations are necessary to control inflammatory language and disinformation.

This row threatens to become part of a far wider existing cultural and political conflict between the current US administration and Europe.
