Wimbledon Introduces Video Replay Technology This Season.

The Championships court with video review technology

The tournament joins the US and Australian Opens in employing replay technology.

Video review technology are set to arrive at Wimbledon for the 2025 edition.

Players will gain the right to question particular calls made by the official, echoing the protocol already in use at both the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.

This innovation is slated for use on Centre Court and the number one court for the duration of the Championships and on the other four show courts when they are hosting singles matches.

This development follows just a year after the AELTC introduced ELC, which brought an end to the centuries-old tradition of line officials.

Reviewable Decisions

Players will not be permitted to dispute the call of the ELC system, but they can ask for the umpire to review other situations, including:

  • If a ball has double-bounced.
  • Whether a ball touched an rival's racket or person during play.
  • Potential hindrance at the conclusion of a point.

Notably, there will be no cap on the amount of reviews a player can request.

A Recent Example

A recent example occurred in a recent tournament last week, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the review system against his opponent.

Draper conceded it was a tough situation for the umpire, but thought his opponent had "played the rules effectively."

The umpire watched a video and determined the player was responsible for hindrance, awarding the rally to Medvedev.

Broader Adoption

Video reviews aren't exclusive to Grand Slams. It was adopted at the US Open for two years and the Aussie Open since 2025.

Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the ATP circuit will have video reviews implemented at all of its events.

Other Changes

A further change at The Championships 2025 will be the introduction of visual indicators on scoreboards to support the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.

This addresses situations where the crowd have occasionally been uncertain if a ball was out or in.

In other news, with exactly a century of days remaining until the beginning of the tournament, organizers have also revealed an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
